[Poll #1108531]

...but also bc I never realized there's more than one answer to Q3. Also, even I can't figure out what category aerial acrobatics belongs in for Q2: sports? martial arts? yoga/stretching? (I count it as such in my tabulations bc of the intense warmup)

Awww...

I often see people running with strollers and think how great it is for kids to see their parents exercising. Falling asleep to the sound of my mother biking as she read her magazine was a big part of my childhood.

One of the reasons I like bike riding and running is that Eleanor sees me doing it. When I was just exercising at the gym it was out of her awareness.

I bought her snow shoes and I'm hoping we can do a lot of that together this winter!

I've been dragging them to the pool in past years, but this year is even better, as D finally learned how to swim confidently, so I can play with him, but also take a break to go do some laps. He's working on his diving, now. :)

In the summer, I drag them rollerblading and biking, and I'm expecting this year, they'll be the ones dragging me out. I'm looking forward to it!

I normally like to exercise every day, but crazy kid schedule and snow have kept me from my normal bike commute the last several weeks, limiting me to Early morning runs. Ah, to dream of Spring.

I hadn't realized how much my fitness was seasonal until the snow started falling and I couldn't get myself onto the treadmill :(

Same here. I'm only averagine a run about 2x per week, whereas I'd prefer to go 4x. And biking in the cold wind just isn't happening, so I'm only biking about 3x per week instead of 5x.

Until last week I was riding my bike to and from work every day but the snow and crap on the road has put an end to that for now. sad!

Ironically, this was the first morning in a long time that I ran outside... And of course I discovered that while the roads were clear, the parts that go through the woods were all frozen :(

You don't have an option for "teach a fitness class" ;-)

How did I know you were going to say that?

I call that the "So I can eat more" option :)

And I'm so glad I'm not the only one who left out "So I can be fit".

Does the walking I do every day in my commute count? Or the baby curls? (Mr D. is >30 pounds, so picking him up should count for something.... my biceps have really developed this year, and it's totally due to him.)

Also, I walk to/from the station because I'm cheap. And I pick up Mr. D because I have to.

I would say no to both. I was surprised in looking at the results to see that someone I know who doesn't walk for fitness ticked that box: I don't count my own walking, even when I was walking a mile each way to work, bc it's a means of getting places, not something I do for exercise. It's just a happy side-benefit of living/working in NYC :) Similarly, lifting Mr. D is not optional. I mean, unless you are just lifting him for the purposes of curls - sounds like he'd make a good "smart"bell :)

He's definitely progressive resistance.

Yeah, then I don't exercise at all.

I find exercise to be mind-numbingly boring, so I tend to just stay active. I stare at a computer all day, so afterwards, I try to find something physical to do. I might work on my boat, which doesn't sound like much, but I'm currently taking my 700-pound engine out of the boat, dismantling it down to the block, and putting it all together again, and re-decking some spongy parts. I work on home construction or woodworking. I sportfish, which again doesn't sound active except wrestling 30+ pound fish isn't easy, and more often than not, I end up dragging the entire boat around trying to haul a stuck anchor off a rock in 70' of water.

If I had a choice to exercise or just do something, I just go do it, but like your walking, I don't really consider it exercise. I don't really do it for the sake of fitness or health. I just like to do it, and the health benefits are almost accidental.

I think it's awesome that you consciously look for physical stuff to do as a contrast: part of what motivated this poll is folks who say they want to exercise more, and make that a New Year's resolution, but don't really mean it bc they don't actually believe in it.

Any regular exercising on my part is entirely a result of vanity...
I play in the swamp, work in a Science Center doing animal chores and whatnot, and crawl around on the floor with turtles doing kids birthday parties, but I don't consider this "exercising"

Used to be I exercised so I'd stay sane and destressed instead of going postal. I'm no longer sane. Watch the news for someone in California who climbed up on the roof with a deer rifle. :-)

I consider random walking around and being active to be exercise. If that's the case, then I think everyone should exercise. But it seems like you think that exercising is only if you are doing something where the goal is to change your body in some way through physical activity. If that's the case, then I very strongly believe that no one really needs to exercise unless they want to.

I disagree. I think everybody should get some physical activity every day and I know too many people who work behind desks all day and go home and watch tv and steadily weigh more and get more out of breath every year and will die that much sooner. I mean, there are people who work behind desks and walk/bike half an hour each work day to get there, and that's fantastic. But if the difference between the former and the latter is an accident of where they live, rather than an understanding that this is like dentist visits - something no one really likes that is important for good health - then good health for that person is an accident and just as likely to disappear with the next move.

Y'know what's REALLY interesting about this? I just re-read what I wrote and I recognize it's a bit dogmatic, and I try hard, in general, not to be dogmatic. And a lot of very smart, fit people on my flist agree with you, which is always an excellent reason to reconsider my opinions. BUT...

...remember that remark you made once about how it's important to me that someone I date be active? I was taken aback at the time, bc I don't think of it as something I select for, but as I think about my response to this poll, I suspect it may be a core value so deep, I forget that other people feel differently and thus I might need to select for it.

its either take pills or work out or go blind. Working out seems much less expensive. Plus it really helps you problem solve in the afternoon.

I dance and I downhill ski. I find there's no better cardio than a 5 1/2 hour night out dancing salsa. :)
