When I was in Seattle, I spent an embarrassing amount of time in the REI flagship, checking out all the nifty stuff I didn't need. Ya'll might remember that after my last backpacking trip, I wasn't really in the mood to ever do it again. While at REI, I realized one of the big issues is that my tent is uncomfortable - I can't sit up in it bc it's only 26" high and it's shaped roughly like a coffin. I couldn't believe that REI sells tents I can kneel in - that weigh one pound less!
It's that week when they give members 25% off one item, so I'm thinking of buying a new tent. In the store, I decided on the Marmot EOS 1P: the salesguy said that if money is no object, it's the most stylish and well-designed. However, I discovered that the Mountain Hardwear Stiletto 1 was marked down to the same price. I wonder what feature caused it to sell for $100 more than the Marmot tent; it's 7oz lighter, but 2/3rds the floor size. If there's something else, I might prefer the Mountain Hardwear tent...
I feel kinda guilty about getting rid of my tent after only 5 uses, even though I bought it used for $50. Also, part of me wonders if I should get a two-person tent - maybe someday I'll go backpacking with someone else and want that. Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, and Big Agnes all have 2 person tents w/in half a pound of my old tent's weight, although the comments seem to indicate you'd have to be very friendly with the other person.
And of course, we all know Mountain Hardwear is a great company - even Neil Gaiman wears it. In Mongolia, no less. (I'm such a dork, that's my current work computer background.)
Speaking of discounts for Columbus Day week, The Teaching Company is offering a free lecture about what killed the dinosaurs. They must've been worried about my wandering away from the flock.
Edit: ARGH! How did TTC decide that John McWhorter's new Linguistics lectures require visuals?? I might've bought that one...
Edit2: Oh yeah, the other thing about a 2 person tent is that maybe just maybe it'd be so large, I'd consider camping at a campground. Like when the climbing club goes to Rumney or Red Rocks or that cool place in WV.
