The good news is, Runners World has
a fabulous page for diagnosing runner ailments. The bad news is, despite cutting back on the hills and staying at the same mileage, it still hurts.
According to the website, I appear to have patellofemoral pain syndrome aka Runner's Knee: it started with my kneecap feeling loose and it still occasionally does. Unfortunately, young women are particularly prone to it. On the plus side, Runners World says I don't have to stop running totally, just lower the intensity, hills or distance. It also says that squats and climbing stairs are bad; I guess maybe running 5mi on Weds, then deciding while I was high to immediately run up the stairs to my apt (fortunately, I stopped at 4 and took the elevator) was a bad idea.
This was also a great article about knees and specifically why mine suck.
Anyhow, this started when I passed the 15mi/wk mark a month ago, so I thought keeping my mileage steady and laying off the hills would do the trick. This morning was supposed to be my slightly normal that the last one run (6.7mi vs. 6.0mi last week), but during the fifth mile, I started having mild pain in my left knee, which seemed like a bad thing. Also, I was hungry - I think it's time for me to join the happy world of Gu, bc my long runs are now regularly more than an hour - today's was supposed to be 80-90mins. *le sighs*
