[Poll #1809958]

*I've decided that shinies are for buying things I feel guilty about, even though I shouldn't, really, bc I can totally afford $6/box tea and $10 ebooks. By doing chores to get shinies, my house gets cleaner and I get guilt-free stuff: I win!

Edit: Oh yeah, the bonus question is bc I've been reading Andrei Codrescu's highly recommended New Orleans, Mon Amour and while the language is lovely and evocative, it only seems to fuel the cliches I already know, instead of giving me context.

I didn't think I would miss brick and mortar stores, until our local borders closed.

As much as it pains me to admit, the library just isn't the same.

B&N does same day delivery in NY, without the hassle of having to =look= for a book, deal with lack of stock, or be tempted by other books.

Being tempted by other books is a feature. I find some of the best stuff that way. Powells is for finding books I didn't already know that I wanted to read! (The Internet is for finding books I knew I wanted to read.)

Barnes & Noble has turned into a toy store so slowly, I barely noticed it.

Also, re: The Teaching Company, make sure you never buy a course unless it's on sale. You can wait - every course goes on sale at least once a year (and some more often).

They screwed up last year in showing that they would send me a notice to a 90% off sale.... b/c now I'm not going to buy from there again until I get a deal at least as good. ;)

To be sure, I own dozens of their lecture courses, going back to the 90s when I started buying (on cassette tape and VHS...I still have them, too. If they have them available at 90% off, I'll upgrade to DVD or CD)

OMG, not only would I never buy a course unless it's on sale, I would never buy a course unless it was on sale and I had a =good= coupon. They screwed up when they started sending me $10 off anything coupons. The trick is, Greenberg's music fundamentals course is never on sale when I get one of those. Fortunately, I bought 2 courses since I wrote the poll question and still haven't finished the new China lectures, so I can wait a while :)

Did you ever get the Friends & Family coupon? 50% off sale prices on 25 courses. That's why I bought the integrated Greece & Rome lectures and the ones on the Axial age. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :)

I get all sorts of coupons all the time, because they know that's what pokes me into buying something.

This morning, I started listening to my first Greenberg lecture set - Beethoven. He's a hoot. (and just finished McWhorter's Linguistics survey course)

I had mainly been sticking to literature & history, but I think I may start looking into the music stuff.

I wish to complain about this poll. My answers cannot be constrained to radio-buttons!

I would miss the sales from brick and mortar stores, possibly. Going TO them, no, except possibly for signings. I haven't BEEN in a physical bookstore for other reasons in the last few years, except once to buy some gaming books.

Hey, when in you're in New Orleans think about renting a bike to get around. On our last day we found this shop: http://ridethisbike.com/ The guy is pretty awesome, and he rents folding bikes, so they're easy to take into buildings/trolleys with you so you don't have to worry about theft. The shop is right next door to the French Quarter Wedding Chapel that's on some reality TV show.
