Why is it I can sleep 11 hours at my parents house, but in my own apt, after 7 hours, my body decides I clearly must get up, even though it's dark out?

Anyone have a fave bookstore in NYC (or Boston or DC?) to which they like selling books? It's been 4? years since the paperback book store on the UWS closed and I still miss it. The Strand's book-buying policies are unhelpful in this case and I have quite a few to get rid of.

Anyone have a fave charity that works with the homeless? A comment on lj reminded me of a thanksgiving offering I need to leave. I'm thinking Housing Works - they work with the mentally ill and I'm sure some people think deliberately walking somewhere cold so you can sleep on the ground is a sign of mental illness - but I'm open to suggestions.

I have a lot of other thoughts, but I might go to work early today and do a CrossFit workout at lunch instead. It's been a long time since I could...

I always sold my books on Amazon, or donated them to a library. If you just want to get rid of books, the best way is to put them in a library return bin. They know how to dispose of books if you don't.

I never sold paperbacks. My paperbacks are pretty unusable once I get rid of them. There are paperback swap sites, but I don't know where.

Half.com is also a good way to go, selling online.

I know what you mean. I suggested half.com, because they make it so easy. Get a bunch of book-sized mailing envelopes. After you sell something on half.com, you can link from there directly to your PayPal account, where you can automatically create a label with shipping embedded in it. PayPal prints the label, you attach it to the envelope, and drop it in the mail box. It's a little time and trouble for each one, but you don't have to make a separate trip. The books just stay listed on half.com until they sell; you don't pay half.com anything until you get paid by the buyer.

Thanks for the thought... it doesn't look like they partner with anyone in NYC :(

I'm very fond of Book Mooch for getting rid of books since this way you also get to receive books! But, if you have trouble mailing, this may not be the solution for you.

What are the Strand rules for books?

I sell to Raven Used Books in Harvard for non-fiction. For fiction, particularly science fiction, I either donate to MITSFS for fine credit if it's a first copy or a first circulating copy for MITSFS, and sell to the Harvard Book Store if it's not. The things they don't take (usually the really popular stuff, etc.) I give to my local library or Goodwill.

They only take hardcovers if they are reviewers copies, even if you bought it there and it's in mint condition :(

Hm, maybe I should bring the books up this weekend - I'm looking to get rid of 3 or 4 of the Merry Gentry books and I might get rid of the Alice Borchardt books as well. I also have a pile of popular business books.

I don't know the Harvard book store policy on hardcovers. Raven takes hardcovers, I'm pretty sure. (But they don't do fiction.)

Bring them up if you want, but you may have to dump them at the library, because you never know what things the stores will take ahead of time.

grr... they don't take hardcovers if there is a soft cover version :(

Guess I'll try Powells.

Try also Lorem Ipsum on Hampshire ave, near Prospect street.

They have a good selection, and I've gotten rid of a large number of (often obscure) inherited books there.

Clearly this is the universe informing you that you should go to Bostom more often. :)

Powells.com! It's brilliant. You enter the ISBNs online, it tells you if they want them or not, and it gives you store credit with them. They pay for shipping and print out the label (or as many labels as you need). Their prices aren't bad, and they took a pretty good number of the books I wanted to get rid of. Highly recommended.
