Yeah, it was starting to get annoying at Berkeley for that reason. A lot of urban Hippies with holier-than-thou attitudes. I learned a great deal about "alternative lifestyles," but saw the hypocrisy within many.
In this post, alternative = NY circus people, i.e. the sort who do a lot of yoga. The person in question wrote mean things and zir sig line was "Namaste!" which means "I bow to you".
