katestine: (climbing)
I have absolutely no idea what I did Friday, as I don't seem to have tweeted and I didn't work out. I suspect I watched another episode of Kings, which is really fantastic: if you liked Deadwood, you have to watch this. That night though, Pongo and I drove to his cousin's house in the country, where we had food cooked outside. It was my second time meeting anyone related to him and I got to hear some of his stories, but from their perspective, which was delightful. They are awfully nice people -- and they live on the way to the cliffs!

I was eager to get to the Gunks early, bc as a newbie leader, I could only find a few climbs that sounded do-able. My first multi-pitch lead: Ribs, maybe Arch ) The folks behind us ended up sharing a rappel with folks I know from the club, who came down, saw me sorting the gear, and asked, "When'd you start leading?" Heh.

We were both hungry and thirsty from the climb - it was 3pm by the time we got to the ground - or I'd've wanted to rappel back to the end of Ribs and see what happened with that roof of many manky pins. We were not particularly expeditious with putting stuff away, but when we got to Frog's Head (5.6- PG ***), there was a team finishing the climb. woohoo! Read more... )

Then we repaired to Rock & Snow so I could buy the Near Trapps guide book, looking for more climbs I can lead, and to Bacchus to celebrate with a sour Belgian beer and nachos. I was feeling a little on edge from the day's adventures, but for the first time, I feel like I can truly call myself a 5.5 leader to people in the club. On the way home, we stopped at Target for supplies for Lucky at camp; I was like George Bush and the supermarket scanner, and bought pickles and beef jerky and ice cream and a new sippy bottle Nalgene. Pongo dropped me off at home and I fell asleep fast.

I was moving slowly on Sunday morning, but eventually made it to LBro's. My family was (almost) all there, but half of them were asleep, so we went out for coffee. I'm glad I got to see him, since I won't see him again until we visit Geneva in October, and my niece was adorable and the cake was nice, but it was kind of a waste of day. I finally left at 5, turning down a ride bc I was annoyed with how my mother conned us into staying all afternoon. Eventually I went for a 5mi run: I haven't been able to hit a good caffeine roll since I got back from Nepal, but even without caffeine, I got a very nice exercise high. I fell asleep with my new guidebooks piled around me, for the first time in a long time.
