A Multi-Media Weekend
Jul. 11th, 2011 07:35 amPouring rain canceled both happy hour and running on Fri, so I went home and made pasta and read the first 40% of the first in the new Percy Jackson tetralogy. I haven't made pasta in years bc it's too carb heavy for my usual endeavors, but I have 5 boxes. So far, melting seems to be the only way to make soy cheese palatable.
Unfortunately, this meant I was behind on what I needed to do for Nala's visit. Sat morning I ran 6.7mi. Even though this was a mere 10% increase over the prior week and hardly an overall distance increase, my ankle and then my knee started twinging during the run. Which would've been ok, except Nala later noticed me limping. She was so horrified by how I was walking, she almost offered to pay for a cab so I wouldn't have to walk down the subway stairs. But that comes later.
It was lovely to see her, as always. I love chatting with her and in person, we don't have to worry about dropped calls, bad connections, or distractions. We tell each other important rather than urgent things and discuss our deepest fears. I also did laundry and opened packages, getting her opinion on new clothes.
I'd offered to take her to Disney for her 30th, so she could have dinner at Victoria & Albert's, as I had, but getting on a plane had seemed daunting, so I took her to Strip House instead. ( a magnificent dinner )
Sun we went to the Met first thing to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit - but we still waited most of an hour to get in. And it was worth it. ( with additional comments on inherently 18th and 20th century mediums ) I know real artists don't want to have to explain their art, bc that's imposing meaning from above, but if you don't know what they are responding to, it's harder to be engaged.
We had a late brunch at Candle 79, a vegan restaurant on, er, E. 79th. It was delicious, and not just bc I missed huevos rancheros. I've added vegan as a genre that I'll eat, alongside Italian and tapas.
We spent the afternoon sorting through the sex toy drawers, as Nala was horrified that they didn't close properly. I didn't think we threw out much, but they close properly now and the condoms have been sorted for ease of grabbing. We didn't have time to tackle the clothes before Nala alas departed. I had two very long conversations with belay partners, which made me realize I'm vastly overscheduled - I do not have a single free weekend between now and the end of October, with 2 trips scheduled for Boston and upstate New York each, one to WV, and oh yeah, one to Ecuador. d'oh!
I watched A Single Man, aka Colin Firth's pre-Oscar movie, over dinner. I was expecting a romantic dramedy - even Colin Firth couldn't resist a little humor, saying at one point "I'm British. We expect to cold and wet." - but it turned out to be an arthouse film. I like my art straightforward, but the blend of strange but eventually explained images, foreshadowing, and clever storytelling was just right for this Neanderthal. I'm amused this was my second film set during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 3 weeks - and maybe there's a reason I enjoyed both scores? And also, gay nekkid Colin Firth in glasses. Kate recommends.
