The new Harry book is early and excellent
Apr. 3rd, 2009 08:20 amI nearly died Weds night.
From laughing too hard at Turn Coat, the new Harry Dresden book.
Ironically, the same day I wrote my last whine about library books, it turned up in the system and even though the official release date is next week, the library gave it to me on Weds. I tried really, really hard not to finish it that night, but despite going out drinking with my cow orkers and not getting home until 8, um yeah.
It's good. Harry is even funnier than ever - I really was choking as I read it. The story has depth and pain. The plot isn't formulaic; actually, it reminds me of the movie The Dark Night in its convolutions. The only thing I didn't like was that Jim Butcher found a way to ( spoiler ) However, it's done so organically, it doesn't feel like an arbitrary author decision. Anybody heard how far he's plotted the series?

I think it's interesting that the first Harry Dresden comic book was nominated for a Hugo this year, while the Anita Blake comic books get... the Chris Sims treatment. Then again, Welcome to the Jungle was awesome, original, and deserving, whereas the Anita Blake comic books are... not.

My mum and I were chatting about Passover last night, so I asked if she'd reserved the new Black Jewels book for me. Somehow, the NYPL, in all its branches, still hasn't ordered it, but my 60K person town had a copy. I'd texted my mum to reserve it, but she sometimes doesn't get texts and had never acknowledged. "Yes, I have it here, I've had it for several days." After I finished gasping, I immediately started plotting how soon I could get to Ct ;)
