Somehow I've read more Mercedes Lackey this year than any author. Yikes!

Picked up a copy of Exile's Valor at the library sale. I read most of the Valdemar novels and while I'd never had the urge to read the Alberich trilogy, it was only a quarter. It was a good bedside book, bc I'd get to the end of the chapter and think, "Yeah, these characters will wait until I have insomnia again." It was packed for the three months of construction, but when I found it again, I finished it for completeness' sake rather than interest. The next day, I started again at the beginning, bc she brings back a character in a way I couldn't recall - and discovered the reason I didn't remember anything about the character is that she switched his name and class twice in the five pages where she introduced him. GAH! Then I read the Wiki article, which explained the Mary Sue character and was horrified in retrospect - but at least I understood why an extraneous character turned out to be the hero. At least John Ringo gives himself hotties, instead of harsh foreigners he's spent multiple books dehumanizing.

In contrast, it's all TRQ's fault I got no sleep this week, for reminding me of the Dresden Files books: I'd planned on watching the series before reading the books bc the former isn't as good (from what I hear) but then she reminded me so I requested Storm Front from the library and didn't get to sleep until 1am bc there was no way I could leave Harry in danger without knowing how he'd be ok. *glares*

Also read And Less Than Kind, the next book in Lackey's "fairies in Tudor England" series. The first few were entertaining enough for me to buy the eARC and I still think it neat how they wove the fey into history. And Less Than Kind covers Mary's reign, badly. Elizabeth spends a lot of time bemoaning her danger, but I never actually believed she was in danger. And I wonder how they'll tell the story of the early years of Elizabeth's reign when they mentioned Robert Dudley only once or twice, and never from when they were in prison. Seriously, we heard about some random dude named Francis from the Norfolk family more often and I'd never heard of him before.

I've mentioned how bored I am of the 163x books? Despite that, I gobbled up Time Spike, possibly bc it has the "we must use ingenuity to stretch limited supplies in a dangerous world" thing going on, except this time it's a maximum security prison sent back to the Cretaceous. Woohoo dinosaurs!
