Summer planning madness begins
Apr. 2nd, 2007 07:02 amDoes anyone still shoot film? I have piles and piles of film in my fridge and I can't think of any circumstance under which I would use it, but I hate to throw it out. Sally the SLR is very unhappy: even with fresh batteries, she flashes the "no battery" signal, so I think something just needs to be bent into shape or something. erm. Hoping to take her to a camera shop this week, although it seems pretty silly bc of the above.
Also need to start thinking about what I might take to Kili. That trip is going to be a bit rough on me AND my cameras: I'll be packing for everything from equatorial African heat to single digits, including some camping gear. d'oh! I'm still debating about whether I want the latest (or maybe second latest) Digital Rebel or the Canon 20D for the trip. I have the Elan 7E, but that was mostly for the nifty eye thingy than any of the features. I know some of y'alls got the 10D/20D after doing a bit of research - what made you decide on those rather than the Rebel?
There's the whole battery life at freezing issue, which worries me more after experiencing it first hand. so far my plan is to bring 2 extra brand new batteries, manage my expectations, and hope for the best.
I'm 90% sure I'm going to bring just my 20/1.8 and my 70-200/4, with the former going up the mountain and the latter going on safari. (I'll have my water- and shock-proof p&s as well of course.) While there'll be some wildlife on our hike up (rangers with guns!), by then I should be animaled out. And, y'know, that thing is heavy! Most of the camera guides I've read about safari suggest that you need a minimum 400mm lens to be happy, so I figure the 20D/Rebel sensor thing that turns a 35mm into a 50mm should help, right? I considered buying another lens - it's a once in a lifetime trip after all and ZOMG! wild elephants/giraffes/lions - but really, I'm not strong enough to carry a more powerful lens. I guess I'm going to have to take a laden camera bag on all my hikes this summer to practice as it is.
It's so annoying that July 4th is a Weds this year. I'd like to do a "serious" hike sometime in July as a reality check - Kates sometimes forget that they are not nearly as strong, brave, or fit as they think - but I don't think I'll be able to con the parents into chauffeuring me up to Mt Washington (they have an out of town family wedding that week). I started looking into minimal driving options up there, but when the fly-to-Portland-and-rent-a-car plan started looking good, I wondered why I didn't fly somewhere with more interesting scenery. Briefly thought about Denver, but decided the event was too late and really, I'd want to go to the classes. I guess there's always Zion :) Yes, this is me asking if anyone has a mountain (with good views) and a major airport nearby, and wants to see me in late June/early July.
Expect to hear more about hiking and provisioning and trip planning over the next few months. Next up is ye olde medical post, wherein we discuss first world medicine, the new colonialism.
