I'll never understand wine
Dec. 24th, 2006 12:03 pmEverytime I start thinking I might know a thing or two about wine... I drink something from France. *sighs* So I wandered into Columbus Circle Wines, had a lovely chat with the proprietor who couldn't have been more down on beaujolais noveau, and tasted the stuff they were serving that day. There were two whites and two reds: a chardonnay from the Loire; a sauvignon blanc from somewhere in France; and two merlot-based thingees that had place-specific names, I want to say one was a Bordeaux and the other was a meritage from somewhere. anyhow, the chardonnay was a bit of a surprise, bc it didn't taste like a chard - it was lighter and refreshing. I didn't know chadonnay could taste like that! the guy said it was bc it was a French chardonnay, but I've had Louis Jadot before. Anyhow, I bought a bottle of each of the whites. Since I just finished drinking the chardonnay, I was going to put it into my wine database - and realized I couldn't figure out anything about it.

Seriously, I'm suppposed to figure out the vineyard from that gobbledy-gook? *throws hands in the air*

Equally bewildering, at a terrible party last weekend, someone offered me a glass of wine. It was a byob and the guy said it was something the guy at the store recommended, which made me very suspicious, especially as he didn't even know what kind of wine it was, just that it was red. I was telling him about how I hate merlot when I took a sip and said, "That's pretty good!" And then the bartender handed us the bottle - and it was merlot. *hand-slap-forehead* I have no idea why this particular cheap merlot tasted good, but apparently I like merlot by Blackstone and by Stonestreet. So. there.
