Two recurring thoughts from tonight's class:

1) Tomorrow is going to suck, given that I managed to land on my head at the beginning of class and my quads were already sore by the end of class.

2) What is it about quasi-Asian arts that makes them so poncy? After all, We don’t have to claim dinosaurs in our family tree if we are actually descended from perfectly respectable geckoes, and all that.

At least I found out why my shoulders/back were sore last week - slapping the mat. We spent a third of class doing kempo, so less real falls, but I found that it only took one or two to get me to remember how all this stuff works. And I enjoyed sparring with the new student - he seems to have chilled out.

Edit: I need a good tagline for this icon, but somehow Beckinsale's fake British accent doesn't translate to the page very well.

Edit2: Before I forget... apparently it's the defenses against a sworded opponent that are asymmetrical. And I still need to work on keeping my head down.

Do you ever find yourself checking emails from multiple years ago? Spam killed my main email addy from 2001-2003 and I never cleared it out. Not having looked at it in quite some time, I'm vaguely tempted to let it go...

Spent the weekend aspiring to CJ-ness. For the first time since I moved in, almost all my clothes are in the right places: winter clothes are grouped in a logical fashion in the appropriate closet, etc. Very exciting.

What do y'all do with dead electronic toys? I have a phone I killed within 6 months of moving here, a digital camera with a broken lcd and a perfectly good underwater housing I can't be bothered to toss on eBay, a 386 laptop. I have a hard time sending it all down the garbage chute (and a suspicion that I'm not supposed to do that for some reason).

My new cookbooks arrived. I finally broke down and bought both of Lynn Alley's Gourmet Slow Cooker books, after discovering that even her book about toaster ovens had awesome recipes, although I still don't understand who has a food processor but doesn't have a full size oven. I can't wait to try making her savory bread pudding and savory cheesecake. And soon I will give the old cookbook one last final read and bring it to the book swap.

My cookbook shelf! (Quick & Delicious is the one that is going away.)

Go vote!

I wanted to take a picture of my first ever voting experience, but one of the DMV refugees wouldn't let me. They didn't even have stickers or anything! Blood drives give stickers AND cookies. Still, I like that it's the same style of machine as when I was a kid.

In case you haven't seen it, OSC claims there is only one issue today. I agree with everything he has to say, except that I think there are many issues to vote on. Unfortunately, a Democrat victory would be spun as a mandate on the war, rather than irritation with the current bums.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea about what will happen when I am queen, but these people are up for a beheading.

An interesting take on American culture vs. Iraqi culture, by one of our brave boys in cookie dough.

I've only seen 3 movies in the theater this year, but [livejournal.com profile] bandicoot's review and subsequent comments made me consider seeing Flags of Our Fathers.

Separatists, Iranian style. People often complain about all the things the government doesn't tell us, but the press does the same thing and with fewer good reasons, imho.

Speaking of things we don't hear about: has anyone been following the conflict in Mexico? Y'know, the country just south of us?

Prof Bainbridge on why McCain isn't an orthogonal moderate. Bainbridge is far too conservative for me, but I agree wholeheartedly with him on this one. Which is why McCain vs. Clinton or McCain vs. Edwards, ALL the choices scare me. Seriously, vote Kitiara in '08.

Finally, an old one from Wretchard: what Keyser Soze has to tell us in the current conflict.
